Presentation by Conceptual Artist Úna Burke introducing her sculpture and film work for the recently opened exhibition ‘Prosthetics’ in London

As part of the Lily & Lolly Craftfest 2013, conceptual Artist Úna Burke will be making a presentation introducing her sculpture and film work for the recently opened exhibition ‘Prosthetics’ in London.

Úna Burke is a luxury leather accessories designer who utilises traditional leather-working skills in the creation of sculptural belts, corsets, jewellery, handbags and abstract body pieces. With her distinct construction technique, using leather panelling and brass fittings, Úna develops intricate forms from vegetable tanned bovine leather. This work is often concept based, with influence commonly taken from psychological and military sources.

Born and brought up in County Roscommon, Úna now works from her studio in South London.

She completed a BA in Fashion Design at Limerick School of Art and Design in 2003, and then worked in several Irish and UK design studios including those of Philip Treacy and Burberry.

Through her work Una continually aims to create leather objects which are both visually captivating and technically challenging. They are pieces of wearable art which are indefinable as particular garments, preventing them from being placed into the conventional categories of the fashion industry. They are free to exist just as the objects that they are, interpreted independently by each individual.

Una will give her presentation at 5pm on Saturday 15th June in the Factory Theater following a series of Woodturning Masterclasses by renowned Irish wood turner Glenn Lucas.

Gilbert Henry Goldsmith presentation to President McAleese 02

Made In Sligo’s very first Pop-Up-Shop opened upstairs in Tohers Chemist, O'Connell St, Sligo in August this year.

The shop carried a huge range of stock from all the Made In Sligo craft makers and was open 7 days a week for all of August. We had such a great reaction to the shop that Tohers kindly invited us to keep it open right throughout September.

We would like to extend a huge thanks to all the staff and management at Tohers Chemist who have been so generous in hosting, staffing and promoting this hugely successful Pop-Up-Shop in their fantastic outlet.
